Social media or as Gladwell calls “networks”, seems to lack some sort of leader or higher power therefore leading to conflicts and errors. It makes it hard to have direction when everyone has equal say. Gladwell emphasizes that “Because networks don’t have a centralized leadership structure and clear lines of authority, they have real difficulty reaching consensus and setting goals”(Gladwell 197). In networks it is hard to distinguish who’s “in charge” because everyone has the same amount of power. This can be a problem because no one is leading anyone and there isn’t much order. This is why I think that for activism to be truly successful and make a difference then networks aren’t really the most effective way to do so. Gladwell states many issues with making change through social media and how it can’t really be the only source to express activism because it’s not effective and not really controlled.
